Dr. Cuthbert Simpson, one-time...

Dr. Cuthbert Simpson, one-time Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, remarked once that Christian hymnody would be in a bad situation if the words dove, love, and above didn't rhyme in the English language. This remark is especially apt on the Day of Pentecost. The dove is the biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit, which is God's love in action, and it comes from above. This, in short, is the meaning of Pentecost. But meaning is not enough in itself. Meaning must take on significance and with spiritual matters it must be seen in visible action.
