During the 16th century, the Dutch people revolted against King Philip II of Spain. Philip sent the Duke of Alva with an army to put down the rebellion. The city of Rotterdam withstood the Duke's army for a while. Then, it gave up. The victors went from house to house in Rotterdam. They searched for citizens and killed them in their houses. A group of women and children hid in a corner house.
