During the height of the civil war in El Salvador, the
Gospel was a strength to many Christians. They gathered together
regularly, to read scripture, to interpret its meaning, to
support one another in their daily lives -- and to encourage one
another to remain strong in the faith even in the face of
persecution.
The "base communities," as they came to be called, knew that
God's Word spoke clearly about oppression. They were able to see
the oppression with their eyes, and they willingly named it with
