Each year in New York City, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians sponsors the St. Patrick's Day parade. The Hibernians is an organization that is connected with the Roman Catholic Church and dedicated to upholding the teachings of the church.
But in 1993, New York refused to grant the Hibernians the required permit for their parade. The city said that they were refusing to give the permit because the Hibernians were not willing to allow gay groups to participate in the parade.
