Elijah had to pay a price to heed the call to the prophetic task. Elijah slaughtered his oxen as a symbol of sacrificing his past investment in order to commit himself.

To be faithful to God can be costly. It cost Abraham the yielding up of his son. It cost Esther the risk of her life. It meant that Daniel was cast among the lions. Stephen and Peter died martyr deaths, as did Paul, and many thereafter.

What does it cost you to heed God's call? Is it costing you anything at all?
