Emma loved to tell her story. Sitting in a wheelchair, a woolen blanket draped over her knees, she relived her life, alternately laughing and crying. Life had been hard. Emma grew up poor. The piece of land her father homesteaded was mostly rock and brush. No amount of sweat could convince that land to produce. As a child Emma's clothes were shabby, her shoes scuffed, her toys fashioned from any scraps found in the house. School was a luxury that her family could not afford.
