Even their familiar old lives were no longer satisfying nor successful without Jesus. We shouldn't be surprised that Peter and the other former fishermen decided to go back to their old trade. When kids run away, the best place to look for them is in their favorite "haunts." When you are discouraged, depressed, disappointed, often the best thing to do is something familiar, something that will go well for you. But, it didn't work for Peter and the others. They came up empty. Not even fishing was the same without Jesus.
But with Jesus, they found an overflowing load of fish, breakfast on the beach, even a hint of the sacramental fellowship they had with him in the Upper Room. Our Lord seeks us in our most common everyday pursuits, and his presence there with us makes the difference.
