Father of the faithful
Commentary
When we meet him, his name is simply "Abram." In Hebrew, it means "exalted father." Along the way, though, God changes his name a bit. "Abraham" is the new appellation, and it means "father of a multitude."
Both names were filled with irony. For most of his life Abram was not a father at all, exalted or otherwise. By the time the Lord renamed him "father of a multitude," he was a rather old man with just one son.
