Few expeditions have so benefited from perseverance as the journey of Lewis and Clark. On May 14, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark began their journey toward the Pacific Ocean from Missouri. It would be eighteen months before they reached Skamokawa, a Waikeakum village on the lower Columbia River. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned their mission. The company of about forty men traveled up the Missouri River to North Dakota. There they wintered with the Sioux near the site of present-day Bismarck.
