Few strategies for child-rearing and support receive as much affirmation as mentoring models. The benefits of positive role models as stable guides for the young are well-documented. Programs like Big Brothers and Sisters prove extremely beneficial. The significance of role models in the home is also part of the appeal for groups like Promise Keepers. One of the most effective ways to protect "at-risk" children is through the provision of appropriate mentors. A recent Adam Sandler movie, Big Daddy, portrayed a negative role model for comic relief.
The confirmation program in which our son was engaged placed a heavy emphasis on mentors. A retired physician introduced our children to the joys of participating in Habitat for Humanity, working at the local soup kitchen, visiting the elderly, and ecumenical worship. Their relationships has remained close and our son frequently consults him for guidance.
In Paul's closing appeal to the Philippians, he reminds them that Christ Jesus mentors the church in much the same way through the power of the Spirit. The call to be of the "same mind" is urged in 2:5 and 4:2. The catalogue of behavior that is urged in this passage serves to underscore the ways Christ "mentors" his own "at-risk" children into like-mindedness. The same one who has been our all-sufficient sacrifice is further the guide to our grateful response.
