In Flags of our Fathers, author James Bradley tells of a conversation with Jacklyn Lucas. Lucas explains, 53 years after the event, why, as a 17-year-old Marine on Iwo Jima, he fell on two grenades to save three of his comrades, saying, "To save my buddies." Lucas had been only 14 at the time he enlisted, fooling recruiters about his age. As a result of his heroism, he endured 21 reconstructive operations and became the nation's youngest Medal of Honor winner.
