Commentary
The lessons for today are quite disparate. They all have one thing in common: the social implications of God's transforming Word.
1 Kings 19:1-15a
The story of Elijah's flight follows the magnificent tale of the contest at Mount Carmel narrated in 1 Kings 18. That story is perhaps the high point of the prophet's career; this story may be his low point. We are reminded of the juxtaposition in the Gospels of Peter's Confession (Matthew 16:16-20) and subsequent rebuke for rejecting the way of the cross (Matthew 16:21-23).
