Grace is counter-cultural. It was in Jesus' day; it is in our day. In first century Jewish society, the four central concerns of what Marcus J. Borg, in his book Jesus: A New Vision, calls "conventional wisdom" (i.e., the widely-shared concerns of a given period of human history in a given culture) were family, wealth, honor and religion. Religion was the validator of the other three; being religious meant following the law. When good things happened to one, it was because one had kept the law well.
