Søren Kierkegaard said a long time ago now that "purity of heart is to will one thing." People who don't read Kierkegaard may attribute that insight to the character played by Jack Palance in the movie City Slickers. The secret of life, he tells Billy Crystal, is "one thing." What is it? Ah, that's the question. For City Slickers, and possibly for Kierkegaard, identification of the "one thing" may not have been all that important -- the point was simply to have a goal, an uncomplicated focus that gives life meaning and purpose.
