In her book, Unfettered Hope, Marva Dawn observes that it's hard for us, in our
technological society, to have a proper attitude about the importance of work.
Technology, she points out, has changed "things" into "devices." Take the heating system
in our homes, for example. Back in the days of fireplaces and cast-iron stoves, keeping
the stove fed was a task for the entire family. Trees had to be cut down and logs split and
piled up outside the door. The fire had to be kindled in the morning and kept supplied
with fresh logs throughout the day.
