Herbert Lockyer has told of a friend in Glasgow, Scotland, who, many years ago, was in and out of Barlinnie prison because of drunkenness. His chronic alcoholism was the heartbreak of his Christian mother. After serving a term in prison, and finding he had no other place to go, he went again to the one place he knew he could go — home to his mother. His mother literally begged him to “sign the pledge.” Politely, he refused; “No, Mother, I have signed enough pledges to paper a wall. I need something more than a pledge.”
