The high priest was the chief spiritual leader for the Jewish people. The fact that some high priests were venal and conniving did not distract from the lofty position in which they were held. They were regarded as holy spokesmen for God and also the interpreters of the law. As a sign of their exalted position, they were dressed elegantly. Even for ordinary street wear, the high priest wore fine linen, covered by a blue robe bordered with colored pomegranates and golden bells that tinkled as he moved. Over this he wore an ephod or vest and a girdle, with a richly jeweled breastplate.
