In his article "A Natural History of Destruction," W. G. Sebald, attempts to explain the attitude of his German countrymen toward their experiences in World War II and their subsequent remarkable restoration of their country. He raises the question of the morality of the 1942 decision by the British to engage in an all-out bombing "to destroy the morale of the enemy (German) civilian population and, in particular, of the industrial workers." Sebald gives a graphic description of the horrors attendant to the obliteration of eight square miles of residential housing in Hamburg on July 28, 1943.
