I once knew an individual who had a very curious, even bizarre, habit. She would, when singing certain hymns, sing only those phrases with which she could agree. Try that sometime; it's more than a bit unsettling! I suppose some would say that this individual was, after all, only being honest. If you don't believe it, don't sing it. That she was more crimped and restrained than honest would be my appraisal. Just because one can't go with every phrase of every hymn is shaky justification for not singing them or singing them only in part.
