I pass on these comments...

I pass on these comments without identifying the source or the seminary. Several years ago while spending two weeks of study on the campus of a mid-western seminary, I audited a few lectures in a class being led by a visiting professor of New Testament studies. He was examining this passage with the class of future pastors. He pointed out that while early Christians read Jesus into this passage, Jesus himself defined his understanding of servanthood by reflecting on the Psalms and on the prophets. He made a good case against taking Isaiah 53 as a model of ministry. I was much taken by his remarks and in a personal conversation after class he made this comment, "In my denomination the stress on this passage as a model of ministry has contributed to a passive style of ministry. A servant is a person who does a job. Isaiah 53 can unfortunately foster a masochistic attitude." -- Kolsti
