... if human suffering were restricted to the sin for which the sufferer is personally and directly responsible, how little of human suffering would one in fact account for! In one important respect at least, our human situation is not that of the pair described in Genesis 2 and 3: none of us is born into a garden, with only a future and no past, and with all of our decisions ahead of us. We are all born into a world that is already old with the history of sin, guilt, and suffering: the fathers have eaten sour grapes!
