If the pay was the joy and satisfaction of being a blessing, then the workers by the thousands who showed up in the Red River Valley between northern Minnesota and North Dakota were generously paid -- whether they were there since the spring of 1997's flood or newly arrived for just a week's work two years afterward. Much work has had to be done from the first trickle of water over the Red River's banks to the present day, long after the waters have receded.
