If you walked along a certain street in a town where I used to live, you would come to what seemed to be the end of the road. There you would descend a flight of steps and disappear completely from sight for a few minutes. Then you would reappear on the other side. The reason was the street went through a tunnel underneath some railroad tracks. Many streets are like that. On superhighways through mountainous regions, cars traveling at high speed may plunge into the blackness of a hole engineered through the mountain, only to come out eventually into bright daylight on the other side.
