The inquirers in this text clearly got things wrong. George Gallup, the professional pollster, knows the feeling. Early in his career, Gallup confidently predicted Thomas E. Dewey would win the presidential election of 1948. (So did the Chicago Tribune, which famously crowed, "Dewey Wins" in a headline the newspaper has never lived down.)
