It seems strange to us now, but there have been societies where fat was considered beautiful. Primarily, these were cultures that were very poor, and therefore, the quintessence of wealth under these conditions was to be able to eat all you wanted. Conspicuous consumption was manifested in rolls of fat, double chins, bouncing bellies, bulging thighs, and sagging chests. The ultra-wealthy, the champions of fat, reached the point of becoming immobile and were carried around on stretchers.
