It was a custom in Palestine that hosts wash the feet of guests as a symbol of acceptance and hospitality. If hosts refused to wash dust from guests' feet, the remaining dust became evidence that condemned the host as inhospitable.
In the Upper Room the night that Jesus was betrayed, he washed the disciples' feet. In respect for Jesus, Peter refused. His refusal prompted Jesus' reply, "If I wash you not, you have no part in me."
