It was during the Great Depression on the Canadian prairies, that sixteen-year-old Hans
decided to leave the wind-blown prairies in search of a better life. One night when his
family was in bed, he snuck out of the house and headed for town. When the freight train
stopped at the station, Hans joined the ranks of the countless unemployed men who rode
the rails from one end of the country to the other. Hans headed east to Toronto, but
quickly discovered that his skill set was not in great demand. Back on the rails he headed
for northern Ontario, where he found work in the logging camps.
