Jerusalem is the mother of us all.
They arrived in Jerusalem late at night. The sight of shadows on the old city was both eerie and wonderful. There was almost a sound to the silence, interrupted by a few dogs which barked from time to time. "Just like when Abraham came to the hill now called Zion," they thought. "Just like when David ruled and Jesus was crucified, died and was buried. Just like the shadowy silence that first Easter morning when the women made their way to the tomb."
The surprise devotional memory was encouraged and then interrupted. The sight of the old temple behind the old walls was followed by the sight of TV antennae on the houses of Jerusalem. The new and the old; the materialistic and the spiritual --what a strange potpourri of sights!
Yet, that's where we find spirituality --not just off on a mountaintop, not just by a stream or brook or ocean side, not just at a cabin by a lake, but in the midst of the materialistic. The Word of God became incarnate, and "He shall lead ... with joy ... granting mercy and righteousness."
Jerusalem reminds us to prepare the way of the Lord everywhere. Thanks, Mom.
