Jesus, now exalted above the heavens, destroyed the empire of evil in order to present us blameless before the ruler of the universe. The Evil One may surely have expected a different outcome, given the servant role of his Good Friday victim. Someone else who expected a different outcome was King Croesus, the sixth century B.C. king of Lydia in Asia Minor. Deliberating whether to attack the Persian empire, he asked the oracle at Delphi if the undertaking would prosper. The oracle replied that if he went to war, he would destroy a great empire.
