John Bunyan describes Christ's peace in Pilgrim's Progress, following the Christian's having been entertained in a wayside home by Piety, Prudence, and Charity, by writing, "Christian peace is peace for the sunrise and also for the deep valley where the light does not shine by day. It is peace for the darkness when the sun goes down. It is peace also for the 'morning without clouds' that lies beyond the valley, in the realm where the travellers shall have 'rest at the last ...' The peace which Jesus Christ gives to his followers is peace for action, peace for the road, peace to do the will of God. It is not the peace of the graveyards where quiet beauty reigns in the midst of death ... It is rather, the peace of the river on its way from the uplands to the sea. The river is at peace because its bed is made. (The river) is at peace because, beyond the mountains and the plains, the ships and mills, is the ocean, and the 'rest that remains.' "
