John could easily have been carried away on the flood of people's expectations. Yet he, more than most, had the measure of himself. He knew what he was and what he was not, what he could do and what he could not hope to accomplish. Many of us who are pastors have trouble admitting our own limitations, as John did. We are drawn in so easily to the game of being all things to all people. And we are always the losers at that game.
