John had been the Pastor at St. Luke's Church for almost 45 years. St. Luke's was a small congregation which stood at a crossroads about 20 miles from the nearest town. The nearest large city was about 300 miles away. Over the 45 years John had seen a lot of changes, both in the congregation and in the surrounding community. Just for an example, when John first arrived in the parish, it was not at all unusual to have three or four generations of the same family active in the life of the congregation.
