Just about ten years ago, early in 1986, we watched, the nation watched, in horror and disbelief as the space shuttle Challenger exploded with seven astronauts on board, as many spacemen as the whole Mercury Project included. The seven Challenger astronauts strapped themselves in for a trip of several days beyond the atmosphere, where gravity cannot be felt, where no food grows, where every minute is a fight for survival in a hostile environment and the trip back is so strenuous that there is not enough fuel for a second try at a landing.
