Kate had never understood the maliciousness of the bullies who had confronted her and her brother that hot Saturday afternoon. Their meanness made no sense. Forty years had passed since the incident, but she had never found any reason for it. She and her older brother had been playing next to their family's rented duplex. Their game involved their favorite toy, a little pick-up truck. They shared most of their toys because they had very few. Their parents were not stingy; they were poor. This circumstance, of course, made the little toy truck even more of a treasure.
