Illustration
King Croesus, the fabled ruler of Lydia who was noted for his great wealth, had a lively interest in philosophy and religion. Although he lived about 500 B.C. --at the time of some of the greatest biblical prophets --Croesus had no knowledge of the Hebrew people or their religion. He, therefore, brought to his court the Greek scientist and philosopher, Thales, said to be the wisest man of the age.
