Knowing your ABCs in Jesus' day was just as important as it is today. One significant discovery in the caves south of Qumran was a cache of documents that belonged to a businesswoman named Babatha. She had kept records regarding property, debts, marriage, and divorce settlements. An ostracon (an inscribed pottery shard) recovered from Qumran itself displays letters from the Hebrew alphabet, many of them repeated; it is apparently the work of a pupil learning to write. One could say that everything you want to know, or even everything you do know, can be expressed with what is between A and Z.
