The late novelist, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., was commenting on recent cases of constitutional
law, in which civil liberties advocates have been opposing attempts to post copies of the
Ten Commandments in courthouses. Vonnegut pointed out that, as many times as he'd
heard of misty-eyed patriots yearning to see the Ten Commandments on a courtroom
wall, he'd never yet heard of anyone who wanted to see a copy of the Beatitudes posted
there: " 'Blessed are the merciful' in a courtroom? 'Blessed are the peacemakers' in the
Pentagon? Give me a break!"
