The Lord used this text...

The Lord used this text to rebuke Israel's leaders. They hadn't fulfilled their shepherding
assignments. Sheep were untended, scattered, and lost. God held the leaders accountable
for Israel's dismal situation and promised to replace them. This text should bring all
Christian leaders to sober attention. It makes me tremble.
The Lord expects three things here from his leaders. First, they exalt Christ, the "righteous branch." Is Christ exalted in your church? Does he get the glory? Second, are you leading with justice? It's easy to criticize politicians and governmental agencies for their lack of integrity. Are your church funds distributed with the proper emphases? Do your church leaders fairly administrate? Third, in your group do all agree that it's Christ's righteousness that needs to be established, not the leaders' glory and credit? The New Testament warns leaders, "Tend the flock of God ... not under compulsion but willingly ... not for sordid gain ... Do not lord it over those in charge ... And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away" (1 Peter 5:2- 4).
