For many of us who grew up in the '50s, playing marbles was not something we did a lot, but there was Chinese checkers with its marbles and I can remember my father talking about playing marbles. What was once a toy is seen in a much different light by many people. Today marbles are collected. There are collectors' clubs and shows and they have a web site. A newspaper article told how a collector had all his marbles in a padded case and another was looking closely at a marble through a lens like those used to look at precious gems.
