In March 2005, the Chinese government announced a five-year program to reclaim seventeen million hectares of desert land in China. Presently, 400 million people in China are threatened by desertification. The plan will relocate people living on the edge of the desert thus decreasing human damage to the fragile ecosystem, and will close hillsides to cattle grazing which will allow for rehabilitation of the vegetation. Oases in desert areas that are now over-grazed have also been targeted, with the plan to decrease the number of people and animals living in and visiting them.
