Marie Anne, Marquise Du Defand...

Marie Anne, Marquise Du Defand, a French noblewoman, moved in intellectual circles. Included in her group were Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Horace Walpole. On one occasion, when the discussion turned in that direction, she was asked whether she believed in ghosts. She replied, "No -- but I'm afraid of them." Jesus' disciples, in the hours following the discovery of the empty tomb, were understandably afraid of the possibility that there might be a ghost wandering about, masquerading as their Lord. Thomas, on the other hand, was sure he didn't believe in any such phenomenon.
