Martin Marty, arguably our foremost historian of religion in America today, came to town and spoke at our local college. In the afternoon before his stated lectures to a wider audience he spoke to a group of ministers. In his informal talk he said something that I still recollect. He said that years ago people expected suffering in their lives. They learned to live with it. Life was short. Today, he said that the media and other shapers of society tend to give us the impression that we are "entitled" not to suffer.
