Modern psychotherapy has grown up a lot in the last twenty years or so. At its inception, psychological counseling tried to go back to the roots of a person's emotional disorders and explain behaviors on the basis of parental influence, childhood traumas, and the like. It was thought that until an individual became reconciled to the effects of those past influences, she/he could not be free to live a free, effective life.
