As in the Mohammedan mosque today, a sign of reverance and awe: Put off thy shoes from thy feet. This mingled sense of wonder, reverence and awe is what distinguishes religion from morals. It is the idea of the Holy about which Rudolf Otto writes: "There are essential elements in religion which cannot be comprised in any intellectual system, nor wholly exhausted in practice and conduct, and which are only faintly suggested by symbolism and sacrament. Ritual is only justified when words cannot exactly explain what it means.
