One day, nine-year-old Richard was coming home from school. He noticed a noise coming from a paper sack that had been left in a vacant lot. He walked over to the sack, opened it, and was surprised by the sight of three kittens, who were apparently starving to death. Without recalling his parent's comments about having no more pets, he picked up the sack with the litter and took them home. Upon arriving in the kitchen, the words suddenly struck him, "No more animals." He was scared and wanted to hide the kittens but did not.
