Moses handed down the Law God wrote on two tablets of stone. We think of it as rules set in stone, rungs on a ladder we must climb to get to heaven. Obey the rules; please God; earn his favor. Break a commandment and you have sinned and will be punished. The Law is first. This is like arriving late at a movie and assuming that the final scene with the big chase or fight is all there is to the film. God gave the Law to his chosen people, Israel, when they were moving from slavery in Egypt to become residents of the Promised Land.
