Like most people of my generation, I was introduced to the writings of Shakespeare as a high school freshman. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of adolesence. Shakespeare spoke of things of which I had no experience. To make matters worse, he described those events in what seemed an alien, if not foreign language. Of course, I recognized a few words in each sentence. That was the only assurance I had that the play was written in English! When it came to grasping the meaning of full sentences, I was at a loss.
