Most scholars concur in the opinion that our passage was completed after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonian war machine in 586 B.C. The city of Jerusalem and the entire area of the Judea were desolate. The wonderful Temple of Solomon was in ruins. The words of T. S. Eliot in his Wasteland poem written in the bleak days after World War I catch the mood of this period of Israelite history:
"A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
