In the movie, Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal, a preacher's daughter, finds herself
in a new community when her dad accepts a call. It is a lonely place, not only for Opal,
but for many of the other residents as well. One night as Opal lies in bed, she prays for
help. Instead of praying selfishly for her dad to move back to her former town, or for
toys, Opal prays simply for a friend. And a friend she gets, in the form of a stray dog
whom she names Winn-Dixie. This dog and the friendship that grows between Opal and
him, opens the doors and hearts of that lonely town.
