Mr. Finkelmann, principal of the high school, decided to try something different. The
year was 1970: Vietnam was still a matter of hot discussion in the nation and the school.
Experimental drugs and free lifestyles were in vogue, especially in the larger cities, and
youth were demanding more and more say in the governance of society.
Mr. Finkelmann proposed to have a group of students with whom he would consult in matters of school policy and discipline. This group of students would be selected from those who applied. No other stipulations were laid down.
